Carrying a firearm as an civilian
Concealed weapons permits issued at the local level by municipal police departments or NJ State Police for civilians. Applicants must first obtain the approval of their local police chief, then must present his or her application to a superior court judge. A Firearms Purchaser Identification (FPID) card and a National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) are to purchase a handgun and ammunition from dealers in the state. Purchases by New Jersey residents must either be from a state-licensed dealer or a private individual who is a resident of NJ.
